According to a new report from local Albuquerque news station KOB, the Bob Odenkirk series will begin production on its latest batch of episodes in the spring. Given that season 4 filming started a little bit earlier in the winter, this means that the show’s premiere date will likely be pushed back at least a couple of months into the year.
Should this be a surprise to anyone? Well, the short answer to that is no — it shouldn’t be a shocker at all. Better Call Saul routinely has hiatuses of longer than a year between seasons and this is just another example of that. It makes a little bit of sense for the series to take its time between seasons, mostly due to the fact that this allows the writers to do the best work possible and not rush things. They have a larger challenge than the majority of writers’ rooms out there. Not only do they have to make sure that they are telling a great story in the context of this current show, but they also need to make sure that it lines up with Breaking Bad as well. There’s also that future timeline with Gene to think about…
Given that Better Call Saul only films ten episodes a season and a good bit of the prep work is done ahead of time, it does not have an extremely-long production cycle. We imagine that by the end of the summer, filming will be complete leading up to the show potentially coming back in the fall. Of course, at that point the ball is really in AMC’s court in order to determine precisely what they want to do. We’d like to think that they would want the show on the air sooner rather than later, but they may also recognize that there’s potential for better ratings if they wait to launch season 5 until the winter. One way or another, it will probably be months before they give us some sort of official announcement. The main thing we’re hoping for is that it gets paired with the also-excellent Lodge 49 for at least one more batch of episodes.
