Doctor Who New Year’s Eve special will bring back the Daleks

While there is no Christmas Special today (read more as to why over at the link here), the BBC series revealed in a new teaser today that seemingly confirmed that the monster at the center of the upcoming New Year’s Eve special will in fact be one of the most-famous ones in the entire history of the series. The Daleks are arguably the most-iconic foes to The Doctor, at least in terms of an entire race of beings. They certainly do have their fair share of cheesy qualities, but there is something a little sad about them if you can find a way to alter their thinking (we’ve certainly seen that before).
To date, we think that reaction to this news as been a little bit mixed. We know that there have been a number of people who are nothing short of thrilled over the news to be able to get Daleks back on the air, especially after show writer Chris Chibnall opted against using any returning monsters for the majority of season 11 proper. Meanwhile, we’ve also heard complaints from some who felt as though Daleks were a little too predictable a foe. There is admittedly a part of us that was rooting for Cybermen, but we actually do think that Daleks are the right choice here just because they are such an iconic foe and it feels like this is the perfect group to use when ushering in a little bit of the series’ larger history.
This episode on New Year’s Day will serve as the final one for the BBC series for quite some time. We know that season 12 proper will be premiering on the BBC come early 2020, and it remains to be seen if we are going to get some sort of special leading up to it. This represents the series going off on an enormous hiatus with what may very well be the biggest bang possible. We’re expecting a lot of danger, but also excitement. Even though the Daleks are familiar foes, there’s something exciting about seeing this particular iteration of The Doctor squaring off against them.
