Strictly Come Dancing 2018 Christmas Special: Was Aston Merrygold, Jake Wood, Caroline Flack the winner?
Anita Rani and Neil Jones – Anita came on board the series with a new partner (a recurring theme) and a holiday foxtrot. There are probably going to be a number of high scores tonight, but this was a lovely snowman-based foxtrot that showed that Anita still knows how to have fun in the ballroom. Score: 35.
Aston Merrygold and Janette Manrara – This was a little bit of redemption for the JLS singer, who was eliminated in a rather-shocking fashion the last time he was on the series. Also, it may very well be the best routine that he’s ever done, packed full of content and energy. Score: 40.
Ann Widdecombe and Anton Du Beke – Why is anyone giving out a two on Christmas? Seriously, what gives with that? Sure, this was for the most part terrible, but do you really expect anything else this time of year from someone who hasn’t danced in a rather long time? Score: 22.
Michael Vaughan and Nadiya Bychkova – We give Michaela a tremendous amount of credit just for even wearing the Peter Pan outfit! That takes guts. This wasn’t good, but it was fun and we appreciated the gameness of it. Score: 30.
Jake Wood and Luba Mushtuk – This was about turning a frog into a prince, and it was both magical and silly at the same time. Basically, it was wonderful — precisely the sort of thing you really do want this time of year. It was entertaining and that’s the whole point of this show! Score: 39.
Caroline Flack and Gorka Marquez – Our final dancers! Caroline won the show previously and with that in mind, we don’t know how you can be shocked by their performance here. They did a rather sensational job bringing a lot of fun material to the table here, especially since this was a Charleston. Score: 40.
The results!
These were announced at the end of the episode, and it seemed to really be a race between three performers. Ultimately, though, how much does it matter? This is just a fun special and it’s not anything that needs to be incredibly competitive.
At the end of the episode, though, the winner of the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special (per the judges and the audience) was … Aston! He has his redemption and since Caroline’s already won a trophy, it’s hard to feel bitter or sad.
