The Crown season 3: New Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies photo released

Crown season 3

At the moment, the wait for The Crown season 3 is certainly agonizing. Because of everything from the writing process to the recastings, the Netflix drama is in the midst of its longest hiatus since first coming on the air.

At some point in 2019, though, that hiatus will be formally coming to a close as the royal drama returns — and hopefully entertains thoroughly along the way. There’s a lot of meaty subject matter that the series can focus on this time around, including some of the 1960’s and 1970’s. You’ll see an adult version of Prince Charles on the series, new political figures left and right, and also Queen Elizabeth trying to adapt to a rapidly-changing Britain. She’s at the head of one of the country’s oldest institutions, and she has to simultaneously keep up with the world of the new.

While Netflix has not been so kind as to give us a trailer for what lies ahead yet, we do have a new photo featuring two of the show’s new stars below in Olivia Colman (Elizabeth) and Tobias Menzies (Philip). This comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, who give you a rather fantastic reminder of some of what The Crown does best: Impeccably recreate periods of history. The costuming and the sets are top-notch, and of course the scripts and the performances help to make this world feel all the more immersive. It’s extraordinary what they are able to pull off here, especially when you think about what some of the expectations are.

From its very onset, The Crown was pegged to be ambitious. After all, we are talking here about a series with a six-year plan and a hope to recast most of the cast after every two so that they can explore different periods of history. It’s not a model that is easy to pull off by come the end of season 3, the show will be at the halfway point and we’ll get at least another year potentially out of Menzies and Colman. These two actors have been long considered among TV’s most-underrated, and this project should help the two get the limelight they so very much deserve.

Our hope is that we’ll get a chance to see The Crown season 3 at some point in the spring, but nothing has been finalized just yet. Hopefully, Netflix will gift us some fantastic royal news in the new year.
