Odds are that, one way or another, you’ve heard the “rumors” that Harmon is leaving the show, whether it be to focus more on producing or because of his health. There hasn’t exactly been a lot of validity to any of these rumors, and most of the time it’s just felt like a ploy in order for websites to regurgitate the same story, time and time and time again, for the sake of easy traffic. Yet, the truth here is that Harmon has never indicated that he is about to leave the series and, beyond just that, he has a contract that takes him up to season 17 of the series. While there is no 100% guarantee that the show will be on the air for that long, it’s at least something that is floating around out there as a possibility for now. If NCIS does want to be on the air that long, they will likely continue to have Mark Harmon as the lead.
Speaking via ET Canada, a rep for Harmon confirms further that the rumors are “completely false.” There aren’t any overt signs Harmon is going anywhere, and we’re almost to the halfway point of season 16. As a matter of fact, you could argue that this is one of the meatier stories that we’ve seen for the actor as Gibbs in a good while. Just think about some of the subject matter that he’s got a chance to dive into at the moment. For example, we’ve already seen him tackle the responsibility of another leadership posts within the NCIS world and beyond just that, he’s got an interesting relationship with Jack Sloane that is worth even more of a focus moving forward.
Depending on what happens for the remainder of this season, there is certainly a lot of fascinating stuff that could be checked out further on NCIS and the Gibbs character. We’re really hoping that the show goes for variety with this character, and finds some new ways to test him beyond just him telling some of the agents to grab their gear.
