The Walking Dead season 9 midseason poster highlights Samantha Morton’s Alpha

If you look below, you can see that AMC is promoting the second half of this season by putting, front and center, Samantha Morton’s character of Alpha. We understand as to why the network would want to lead with her, given that A) she is the head of the Whisperers and B) she is one of the most notable adversaries we’ve seen since Negan’s arrival. What makes Alpha stand out is almost immediate — her appearance. She, like many other Whisperers, uses carved-up pieces of walkers in order to create what is effectively a mask. She works overtime in order to carve up zombies and then use their skin to mask her own appearance. She and other members of her group can go undetected amidst fields of walkers and use that to their advantage. Be prepared to see a lot of that moving forward on the show, and we certainly do think that this had to be an adventure in the makeup chair for most of these performers.

“The second half of “The Walking Dead” Season 9 finds our groups of survivors, both old and new, continuing to deal with the impact of events that took place during the six years that have passed. Since the disappearance of Rick, many of these characters have become strangers to each other, and in some ways, strangers to themselves. What they do know is that they are in undeniable danger…”
The challenge with a show like The Walking Dead is that they have to figure out how to constantly change the game and do something that is very different than they’ve ever done before. As the show gets further and further along in its run, this is inevitably going to become all the more difficult. There are just so many things that have already been done! Yet, in between the time jump and the Whisperers’ arrival, we do at least get the sense that the writers are taking on new challenges. We’re certainly interested to see how those manifest themselves into the show.
