Jimmy Fallon, Ariana Grande bring back ‘I Wish It Was Christmas Today’

Tonight Show -

For everyone out there who loves vintage Saturday Night Live as a whole, you’re going to love tonight’s episode of The Tonight Show.

In the video at the bottom of this article, you can see Jimmy Fallon re-team with some old favorites in Horatio Sanz, Tracy Morgan, and Chris Kattan for the holiday classic in “I Wish It Was Christmas Today.” There have been some occasional reprisals of this over the years, but for some reason it almost always works. A part of the humor comes with the juxtaposition of the lyrics (which is really a celebration of Christmas) to the somewhat-indifferent looks that everyone has on their faces in the midst of the song. In particular, we mean this for Morgan, who always finds a way to make us laugh in this performance without doing all that much at all.

For the new version of the song, though, the foursome is joined by someone else with a rather-sizable audience of her own in Ariana Grande. The pop superstar is up on stage in between Kattan and Morgan and despite her immense musical talent, there’s not all that much that she intentionally contributes here. Instead, she opts instead to give the camera a fairly-stoic look throughout. It’s mostly funny that Fallon got someone who you’d want to hear sing up on stage and then they didn’t actually sing at all.

While we know that there are plenty of people out there who do understandably consider the original version of this song to be sacred, at the same time we always appreciate it anytime we can hear it — the more new versions of this song that we get, the better off that we’re going to be on the other side of it. Also, it’s hard to get these guys all together since none of them are on SNL anymore. (Sure, Fallon is right down the road at 30 Rock, but everyone is always off doing some other things.)

Alas, we are at the end of the road when it comes to new episodes of SNL for the year, but they will return in a big way in 2019 and we’re very much excited to see what the cast has in store for us then. We’d certainly be down to see any of these people come back on the show down the road as a host, especially if they can bring some other nostalgia along with them.
