Just in case you’ve been craving a behind-the-scenes tease at Law & Order: SVU season 20, we’ve got that for you here! We also think that this one is especially big.

In a new post on Twitter (see HERE), you can see executive producer Julie Martin share a photo featuring star Mariska Hargitay alongside Kelli Giddish. This is from the final scene shot during the calendar year, as the entire cast and crew is getting set now for a much-deserved holiday break. SVU production has been underway since the summer and over the course of that time, the creative team has poured in all sorts of hours into making sure that the stories are smart, feel authentic, and carry with them a super-important message.

So what do we want to see when SVU returns in the new year? For Benson, it’s fairly clear that she should be continuing to do what she’s been up to for quite some time now. Yet, we also do want to see even more of the character outside of work, especially when it comes to her relationship with Noah. It feels like there’s been some tension bubbling underneath the surface there for a while, largely because Noah’s getting older and he’s at that age where he doesn’t appreciate things all that much. We think that things will work out here naturally over time, but there is such a nice contrast between seeing Benson take on life-and-death cases out in the field and then seeing things that are a little bit more personal for her at home.

Meanwhile, with Rollins we’re also imagining that there are some big things coming for her family, given that the character is currently pregnant! Eventually, we’re going to see her maternity leave written into the show, but judging from the fact that she’s still filming as of this week, we’ll probably get to see her for at least a handful of episodes moving forward. There’s a lot of material to mine with Rollins working and continuing to ensure that she puts bad people away even while she is also trying to prepare to expand her family.

In the end, the message of this show, and the second half of the season, is that life doesn’t stop when you put down the badge. After all, there are a number of other things that you have to attend to and not all of those are going to be taken care of in a particularly-easy manner.

SVU will resume production in the new year, which is also when more episodes will air on NBC.
