Unfortunately, the truth here is that last week’s “What Child is This” was, in fact, the final episode of the year. This is a show that does like to wrap up many of its seasons with Christmas episodes and this is precisely what we got here — this was an emotional hour of TV and it does give us hope for some fascinating stories in the new year. There’s obviously potential for more great cases, but also for certain relationships to shift and expand. Think for a moment here in terms of Bishop & Torres, or even what’s been slowly simmering with Sloane & Gibbs. Will that ever turn into something a little bit more than it is.

So what are we waiting for in the new year? Well, NCIS will be returning in 2019 with an arc that feels fairly familiar to some of the other shows within this franchise, as both the NCIS: Los Angeles and New Orleans chapters have dealt with internal investigations and oversight as of late. This season of NCIS proper is going to be giving us something similar at one point in the reasonably-near future, and it is courtesy of the Department of Defense having some serious issues with some of the agents. Basically, this is going to be NCIS in some ways squaring off against higher levels of government and this is not the easiest-spot in the world for much of the team to be in. They’re always going to side with their colleagues first and foremost, but it’s always going to be easier to do that when you don’t have big government breathing down their neck.

Hopefully, this is a situation that is resolved in some shape or form before too long. We obviously know that the entire NCIS team in Washington DC is extremely good at their jobs, even if they do find a way sometimes to skirt the rules in order to ensure justice is served. They never do anything for the sole purpose of intentionally hurting anyone; it’s always for the sake of the job and sometimes the higher-ups just don’t realize that enough.
