The episode “Down the Rabbit Hole,” which ended up being an enormous showcase for Sophie Skelton and her character of Brianna, ended up generating in total 1.12 million live+same-day viewers, the show’s best total of the entire season! What is the reason for that? You can argue that Starz was aided slightly by colder temperatures or less competition elsewhere with the holiday season upon us. Or, maybe there was a lot of enthusiasm to see a big episode for Brianna and Roger after all of the hype. It is fascinating and oddly ironic, though, that the top-rated episode of the season is the only one without the show’s two main characters in Claire and Jamie. (Of course, we’re only talking about live ratings here — as many of you know, these are just a tiny piece of the overall ratings puzzle.)

Still, in general what we find fascinating about the Outlander ratings trajectory for this season as of late is that it seems as though there is more curiosity in the story among casual viewers as things are progressing. Last season culminated with the big print-shop episode “A. Malcolm” and the numbers never reached that level again. It’s good that there is still a positive build happening at this point, more than halfway into the show’s run. (Yes, it is somewhat-sad to think that we are more than halfway through telling this story at the moment.)

As for the show’s ratings future…

We are interested to see what the highest-rated episode will end up being. (Book spoilers ahead.) We know that at some point this season, Brianna is going to have a chance to meet her father Jamie for the first time and on paper, it does feel like that episode would generate more enthusiasm than almost any other. Yet, there are some interesting factors for both the December 23 and December 30 episodes — most notably, the holidays. There may be a ton of viewers out there, but they may not all be available to watch live just because of everything else that is going on. We’ll keep watch on all of this.

No matter what the live ratings are, do remember that Outlander has already been renewed through season 6. It’s not going anywhere for quite some time.
