For a Timeless season 3 to happen, viewership is really key

In a post on Twitter (see below), the writers make it clear that “any hope of the show continuing in some form in the future will hinge in large part on viewership numbers Thursday.” Consider this another reminder that live viewership is still the most important thing to the series’ future, even in this particular era where there are a lot of different ways that people can watch TV.
We do think that Timeless has two things going for it on Thursday — it’s airing at a slightly-earlier time than it has in the past and there really isn’t all that much in the way of major competition out there. Most major network programs, including the likes of Grey’s Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, and Supernatural, are all of the air until the other side of the holidays. While there is still sports competition out there, can’t you take a break for a couple of hours. History is at state!
We don’t want to provide any false hope and with that in mind, there are no guarantees that more Timeless will happen. It’s not something that we currently even expect. Yet, with a big-enough viewer total on Thursday and continued enthusiasm from Clockblockers, anything can happen. This is a great opportunity on Thursday to show either NBC or some other interested party that there is still a rather-large audience of people out there still interested in watching this show. Even if this movie is the last we see of this show for a while, this is a story and a concept that we don’t think is ever going to completely fade into the background. It’s not the first time that we’ve ever seen time-travel as a component to a television show; yet, we do think that it’s one of the most effective uses of the format that we’ve seen. It allows the characters to have fun in certain situations, but there’s still something purposeful and emotional about it as well. It’s one that could certainly be influential to many a show coming up down the line.
