Elementary season 7 will be final season on CBS, network confirms

According to a new report from Deadline, the decision to make season 7 the final one first came about after the show was picked up for a sixth season. There were a number of different reasons for it. For starters, creatively it made sense with the direction that the series was taking. Beyond that, the contracts for series stars Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu were set to expire at the end of this season. The 13 episodes coming up are going to offer up a little bit of closure to the show — even if in some ways the show had some pretty-perfect closure at the end of season 6. That episode was written in the event that it would be a series finale, but CBS went ahead and gave the show another batch of epsiodes.
In a statement per the aforementioned publication, here’s what CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl had to say on the subject:
“A lot of parties came together and talked about their positions on the show — both in terms of business and in terms of creative — and we all decided that this was an opportune time to say goodbye to a show that has been very, very good to us.”
The ratings for Elementary have not been particularly stellar in years, but there was another reason for CBS to want to keep it going — it performed really well via DVR and, beyond just that, it proved itself for many years to be a really formidable international player. The story of Sherlock Holmes has great international appeal and this was a show that the network could plug in and basically air almost anywhere at any time. This past season, for example, aired for the most part in the summer. That was a time that worked well enough for it to deliver some stable ratings.
We’re going to miss Elementary, which is going to end its run as one of the most-underrated crime dramas out there. The only lament that we have at the moment is that there weren’t more opportunities to showcase Moriarty during a lot of its run.
