We had a good understanding entering the finale that Chevel would have some sort of powerful country number to close off her run this season — after all, ballads tend to attract more votes / streams, and we certainly do think that this is one that viewers will listen to a number of times over. The message of “Broken Hearts” is fairly simple: Heartbreak, and wondering whether or not two people will really be able to make things work.

Does Chevel sing the heck out of this? Absolutely, and that’s going to be the biggest selling point for it more so than anything. It’s a straight-down-the-middle country ballad that features much of what you would expect in terms of instrumentation, tone, and message — maybe we’re a tiny bit surprised that Chevel didn’t do something a little bit edgier, but we’re also not 100% sure that she has all that much say in the matter, either. She really just has to take on whatever material that she is handed.

Can Chevel win with this?

In theory, she certainly could. Chevel has two different things going for her, other than of course her talent — there are a dedicated legion of country-music fans who watch The Voice with regularity and beyond that, there are also a ton of Kelly Clarkson fans out there, as well. Kelly showed last season with Brynn that she can take her contestants all the way to the grand prize and given that Chevel is her only artist left, she has a great opportunity to do that here, as well.

The one situation that could help Chevel in particular is if some of Blake’s fans end up splitting the vote between Chris Kroeze and Kirk Jay. With that, it could open up a little bit of a vulnerability and that may be enough in order for her to sneak her way through and be the big winner at the end of all of this. It’s still a competitive field, though, especially since Kennedy Holmes is still out there and is definitely a contender in her own right.
