It doesn’t take too long upon listening to this song to understand what it is — a slow, emotional country ballad that accentuates precisely what makes Kirk such a great contestant this season. It allows him to tell a story and with the backing instrumentation, it sounds exactly like the sort of thing you would hear in country radio in 2018. It’s a song about being vulnerability and being in the right place at the right time.

We don’t say this all that often, but “Defenseless” is a genuinely good song, and we’re not just saying that in comparison to a number of lukewarm winner’s singles that are out there. It’s got a catchy chorus and a memorable name. This is a song that could make a little bit of noise after the show in the right venue.

Is this song enough for Kirk to win?

Absolutely it is. Going into the finale, it’s pretty clear that Kirk already has a lot of momentum on his side — he’s a fantastic singer who has an enormous fan following, and it definitely does help him that he has a coach in Blake Shelton who has dominated past seasons of this show.

What makes The Voice and its finale a fairly-difficult one is that so much of your success can be gauged on the success of your original song. If you’ve got a good one, odds are that you’ll have a much better chance no matter what your past trajectory on the show is. Kirk’s going on all cylinders right now — he’s got the momentum entering tonight’s finale and he has an excellent winner’s single that accentuates almost everything that he is good at. We understand the argument that it’s sometimes great to take a little bit more of a risk in terms of song choice and tempo, but at the same time, do you really want to do that in the finale? You’re playing for the chance to win and you want to give the people what they want. Clearly, the public wants more emotional ballads from Kirk given that this is why he is in the finale in the first place.
