“Love is Free” is one of the songs that Kennedy is performing tonight in the hopes of winning the title, and her status this season has fluctuated all over the map. There have been times when she’s been pegged as a potential favorite to win. Meanwhile, there have also been times when it’s looked as though she was an underdog — including tonight, given that she needed the save in order to make it this far.

What’s good for her with this song is that “Love is Free” feels like something that will separate her from the field, and also really pushes her own spirit and positive vibes to the forefront. This is a pop / R&B number with a little bit of soul, but also opportunities for her voice to shine. It also has a pretty fantastic message, one that is probably clear from the title itself.

Is this song enough for her to win?

With Kennedy, it’s really going to depend. One of the things that she is bringing to the table tonight that offers her some hope is her status as the only non-country vocalist left in the field. Because of that, we do think that it’s possible she will stand out a little bit from the pack. Some of the eliminated contestants’ fans may pool a little bit around her, provided of course that these people are not huge country fans.

If we were Kennedy, though, we don’t really think that winning this season should matter more than anything. There are plenty of winners on The Voice who don’t end up being enormous success stories after the fact and with this in mind, we’re really hoping instead that she just focuses on building her audience and planning for a long-term career after the fact. She doesn’t need to rush into a record deal given that she is so young, but she does need to surround herself with people who will help to make her into a star in the years to come. Find talented people who she can trust and won’t try to just force her into a quick buck.

“Love is Free” is a good starting-off point for Kennedy’s post-show career, but it’s just one of many things that needs to be done.
