Doctor Who – New Year’s Day special is actually set on January 1

In speaking further on this particular subject in a new interview with the official Doctor Who Magazine, series executive producer Chris Chibnall made it abundantly clear why it was important to have this special on this particular day — in addition, of course, to sharing more information all about what you can expect to see:
“The episode is set on New Year’s Day. There’s no better way to start a new year than with Doctor Who.
“You want the special to feel like an event… like an opener and a finale all rolled into one. You want it to be accessible to those who’ve missed the series, but you also want to reward the audiences and fans who’ve been there for the whole ride.
“Most of all, you want it to feel like a treat: a big, thrilling, explosive, moving, cheeky, surprising treat. Basically, you want the special to be epic. And I promise, it’s going to be epic.”
Basically, the objective for this special is for it to celebrate everything that has been on the air in season 11 while also bringing something new and a little bit different to the table. We’ve already discussed at length the promo for the episode, which hints that Earth may be in danger from an attack courtesy of the most-dangerous creature in the entire universe. There are already a number of rumors out there suggesting what this said creature could be, whether it be a Dalek, some other classic character, or some new force to be reckoned with. There’s a lot of stuff to be excited for with this series but, in the end, we’ll have to wait and see precisely how it all plays out.
On the other side of the New Year’s special…
Just remember that new episodes of Doctor Who are going to come on the air again in 2020 — it may be a long time to wait, but we probably do think that it’s better off to wait than have these episodes rushed just for the sake of our own entertainment.
