Star Trek: Discovery season 2 trailer: Rise of the Red Angel

Star Trek: Discovery premiere

Star Trek: Discovery season 2 will be arriving onto CBS All Access in the new year and judging from the latest trailer, we’re in for a lot of drama — just as the crew is in for some pretty serious danger.

One of the first things that we should obviously point out here is that the roster for this series is very much different from what it once was. Anson Mount is coming on board in the role of Captain Pike; meanwhile, you also have Ethan Peck on board as the new Spock. This season will feature a combination of old and new when it comes to characters and mythology and based solely on the trailer below, it looks to be all sorts of exciting and dramatic. At the center of the story moving forward is a new threat known as a Red Angel, a being that has the capacity to apparently wipe all sorts of sentient life off the map. This gives you a small sense of just what you are dealing with here, as this season is likely going to feature characters up against the wall, struggling to figure out the best way to deal with what is a very-obvious crisis that is right to their doorstep.

If you did love the first season it feels almost like a given that you’re going to love what the series is bringing to you this time around as well. Visually, this season looks to be as stunning as they come, and in between Burnham and some other characters, there are many familiar faces still anchoring the story. The challenge for this season is to go bigger, without still abandoning the essence of what Star Trek is — a dramatic but ultimately hopeful look at the future. We think that there are even more cues that this show can take from the original series, and it may help in that sense that there are so many familiar characters thrown into the mix here.

Above all else, remember entering season 2 that CBS All Access is clearly going all in with this franchise — in addition to having a season 2 of Discovery there is a new series featuring Jean-Luc Picard in development. Beyond that, you are also going to have a chance to see a potential spin-off starring Michelle Yeoh that is, at the very least, in consideration. There are a lot of ideas at play here but the streaming service certainly seems to be keen to turn the Star Trek franchise into something that really keeps itself going year-round.
