After getting several chances to direct episodes in the past, we’re pleased to report that LeVar Burton will actually guest-star on NCIS: New Orleans.

So, who is the former Star Trek: The Next Generation actor and Reading Rainbow icon going to play? According to a report from TVLine, he will take on the part of Rufus Nero, a Naval Intelligence agent and someone who works alongside Pride and his team after a rare and deadly virus ends up being stolen. Basically, this is the sort of situation that leads to all hands being on deck. If you make one wrong move, after all, it could lead to an unprecedented number of deaths.
So while Rufus may be a partner for the NCIS: New Orleans team in this episode, at the same time that doesn’t mean he will get along with many of them! Apparently, upon his first meeting with them he does something to really aggravate Loretta Wade. While this isn’t exactly a good thing for the camaraderie of the team, we certainly don’t have a problem with seeing some conflict here. Also, there is something appealing about the idea of Burton playing someone with some possibly-unseemly characteristics, mostly because he’s been known for playing great, heroic figures for the majority of his career. He may still be a good guy here, but rather rough around the edges.
Long before NCIS: New Orleans, Burton worked with Scott Bakula on Star Trek: Enterprise. That relationship carried over here and we’ve been long hoping that there’d be an opportunity to see him actually appear on-screen here. In general, Burton is one of those actors we wish we saw more of on television these days — he has such a nostalgic place in our heart and beyond that, he breaks great conviction and a sense of joy to much of what he does.
Given that Tuesday night’s new episode is set to the be the last one for the calendar year, you’re unfortunately going to be waiting until 2019 to see Burton in action. To be specific, Burton’s episode is going to be taking place in early February. Mark your calendars, and do just about everything that you need to in order to watch live. We’ll get a chance to see after the fact if Rufus is the sort of character with the chance to appear again.
