This was more than just a case, though — after all, this was personal. It all started with McGarrett being attacked inside of his house and as he started to realize that these attackers weren’t going to go away, that’s where things got a little bit crazier. Eventually, Steve and Joe took off to Montana on the main land to prepare themselves for what was eventually a standoff … which we certainly had here. If you’re looking for one of the most violent, intense shootouts we’ve ever seen on Hawaii Five-0 over the years, this episode provided some of that and then some. The shootout waged for beyond a commercial break and while Steve was battling, he also received some other bad news: Greer, one of the last people he ever wanted to see free, ended up escaping.
Also, did we mention that both Cole and Joe were shot? Midway through the battle, it felt fairly clear that Cole was not going to make it. We were a little bit more hopeful about Joe’s fate at first … but that hope started to fade when Steve walked out of their Montana compound-of-sorts to see all sorts of fire. Despite how many bad guys he and Joe took down, more were out there.
McGarrett didn’t win the battle despite his best efforts, but he was still desperate in order to keep it going. He wanted to push Joe despite the bullet that was in him but, in the end, it was clear that he was too far gone in order for that to happen. Medical help was coming for him, but the question was whether or not it would be too late.
About five minutes out from the end of the episode, it was clear that Joe was not going to survive this. In their final conversation, Steve thanked Joe for everything that he did for him, including helping to save his life so many years in the past.
CarterMatt Verdict
This was a heck of a performance by Alex O’Loughlin and Terry O’Quinn both as we saw the journey of Steve and Joe reach its end. We didn’t see Joe all that often but when we did, we knew that it was going to be special. He’s always been with Steve and we know that, moving forward, he certainly will be still. A devastating end to what was certainly a fantastic episode.
