HBO has unveiled a new Game of Thrones season 8 teaser leading up to the show’s big premiere in April, and this one is all about familiar themes.
How much so? Let’s just say that at the center of it are two things in fire and ice that a number of people out there are absolutely familiar with. You can see the fire and ice swirling here around many mascots of the most-famous families in Westeros. Sometimes, you really have to look hard in order to find proper symbolism; however, it’s not altogether hard to find that here. Fire and ice has long been at the core of what makes Game of Thrones the series that it is and we certainly do think that’s going to continue to be the case here. Just look at what happened at the end of this past season with the birth of the ice dragon and the incident at the wall; everything is now set up for us to have arguably the most dramatic season of the series yet and with this being the final season, we’re crossing our fingers for even more fireworks.
What is 100% certain at the moment is that we’re going to get here the most violent season to date, with enormous battles between human and White Walker with the fate of the entire Seven Kingdoms on the line. Politics will still be important, though it does still remain to be seen how many are thinking with that in mind first and foremost as opposed to characters just wanting to figure out a way in order to ensure their own survival.
Going into the final season, we obviously know that this is not the end of the franchise courtesy of the upcoming prequel series coming down the line. With that being said, however, it does appear as though this will be the end of the present-day Westeros story. Most spin-off ideas we’ve heard about are all set very far in the past and we don’t have a good sense that this is going to change in the near future. We just hope that there’s a conclusion to this season that makes some sense to the journey that we’ve received.
In the end, though, this teaser alone shows the might of this show — HBO can release something without footage of any particular cast member and somehow still find a way to generate all sorts of buzz and conversation. Who else out there can really do that? Feels like not too many people.
