In the video below, you can hear Jeremiah announce that “today’s the day” amidst a lot of chaos and destruction that is going on in the city all around him. This is a character who can really revel in the No Man’s Land theme for this season more so than just about anyone else. He’s the real catalyst for all of it and without some of his chaos, maybe Gotham would be a different, partially-happy place at this point.

Yet, that’s not where we are and Jeremiah is going to be one of many threats roaming through the new version of the city, one that will be effectively in anarchy for most of the fifth season. We’re going to see different villains take up residence in various parts of the city. It’s almost like Gotham is being broken down into different districts with separate villains having control over each one. This where the GCPD come into play, as they will have to go into overdrive for the better part of this season in order to create an environment where characters can at least feel marginally safe … which is not going to be the easiest thing to do. While we’d love to say that Bruce Wayne can be the Dark Knight that this city needs, at the same exact time he’s not 100% there yet. We feel like this is a journey that he may be more prepared to take on a little bit further down the road — think in terms of the series finale when we actually flash forward in time.

As for what’s happening beyond Jeremiah in the final season, think along the lines of many other returning villains including the likes of Penguin, Catwoman, Hugo Strange, and many others. You’re also going to see Bane show up on the series for the first time, which is certainly welcome given that he was one of the last major comic-book villains that had yet to be fully brought on. This is the Gotham producers realizing that they are facing the end of their time with the show and with that, they are giving the story everything that they have in order to produce some rather-fantastic results at the very end of it.
