Sunday’s “Savages” ended up generating in total 958,000 total viewers in live+same-day, which is a drop of only around a couple thousand (approximately) versus the week before. That’s fantastic stability, and as of right now it puts the show at #3 on the list of most-watched episodes of the season. Was there a part of us that felt like Outlander would improve, mostly on the basis of the big Brianna story with the stones that was teased? Sure, but we also are just getting a sense that this is the size and scope of the live viewing audience for Outlander at this point. There are so many people watching earlier now that they don’t need to worry about live viewing; meanwhile, there may also be plenty of people who are watching late, thinking that it’s not a big deal if someone spoils for them a story that’s been mostly laid out in books for many years now.
We understand ultimately that live ratings are a super-tiny piece of the pie, but we do think it’s interesting to compare them to other premium-cable shows and viewing trends as a whole. If Outlander can continue to be steady the rest of the season, what that will prove is mostly that it does have a stable and sizable live-viewing audience and that is something that has increasingly slipped across almost all premium cable. We’re seeing that with shows like Power and Ray Donovan, and we feel like we’re going to see that even more in the years ahead now that there are so many different ways to watch. Both Starz and Showtime have already shifted away from live viewing as a main measurement for gauging their series’ success, but who doesn’t like to have people talking about their shows the moment that they are actually on?
The ratings for the next couple of episodes should prove curious, mostly in terms of whether or not the holiday season starts to impact the numbers. Then, there’s also over the holidays themselves. If Starz opts to go hiatus-free for season 4, will it help or hurt Outlander to see episodes airing so close to Christmas and New Year’s Eve? It’s a little early to project that, but we’re certainly going to be looking at that given there are so few opportunities to really examine that.
