Outlander season 4 spoilers: How long could Murtagh be around?

Before we get into the long-term future of Murtagh on the series now that we know the character is in America, let’s start things off with why he is back. In a post-mortem interview that following the airing of season 4 episode 5, executive producers Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis made it clear that they felt like there was still some more story to tell with this character, a guy who very much was a loyal part of the show family and someone they couldn’t bear to kill off at the time the books did so.
Speaking via Variety, Roberts also made it clear that specifically, having Murtagh be a part of the Regulators in the New World made a great deal of sense to them:
“It felt like a perfect fit for Murtagh to join [the Regulators’] cause and fight for that cause and give himself a family to fight for … His whole life, that’s the one thing he has done — he’s protected Jamie his whole life and now he’s a man, if you think about it, a man without a country in the sense of his home being Jamie. He needed to fight for a new home and that would be the Regulator cause.”
Now that Jamie is back, though, does that change anything? Not necessarily. The two may be at odds at times, but we do think that the love that binds them together will remain very much there and more than likely, you are going to see Murtagh remain a part of this world for a little while. To be specific, Roberts notes that his art will, at the very least, take him into next season! That means so much more Murtagh than even we expected, and hopefully, we’re going to get some more surprises along the way with this character. One of the things that we certainly do love is the fact that this is a character that both viewers and readers are in the dark on, so there is a certain bit of flexibility and freedom that can be executed here on all sides. Everyone can wonder where Murtagh can go and, within reason, the writers can send him all sorts of place.
