The Night Of season 2: The state of this lost TV project

One of the things that we’re curious about from time to time are the state of long-forgotten TV projects — or at least ones that have fallen off the map at some point. Many of these are shows that have either been renewed and forgotten, or have always just been in the discussion phase and nothing else really became of them.

At the moment, we certainly consider The Night Of on HBO to be one of these said projects. After all, the first season was a fairly enormous hit for the network and caused it to receive a great deal of awards consideration. While it was always billed as a limited series, we’ve never gotten the sense that the network was content with just that. There have always been talks and discussions about it happening again, but nothing has ever really emerged beyond just “we’re thinking about it.”

So is there still a chance that The Night Of could return in some capacity moving forward? Possibly, but this isn’t the sort of thing that has been officially ordered and it doesn’t seem that the network is in any hurry. Speaking (per IndieWire) all the way back in July, HBO head Casey Bloys said then that they were waiting on executive producer Steve Zaillian to make it clear that he was ready to come back with another idea:

“Steve is a little bit like Larry David, he will come to us when he’s ready … For a creative executive, that’s a nice feeling because if Steve is saying ‘I’ve got it,’ I know he has it. So we’re giving him his time, and he’ll come to us when he’s found it.”

There will be time for another update on this come January, more than likely when HBO decides to have another presentation at the TCA Winter Press Tour. These are questions that will continue to come out, more than likely until the network definitely says one way or another if the show is coming back. It’s not something worth counting on at the moment, but we do think that this idea will be explored down the line, especially if the new True Detective ends up being a huge success. That could be another reminder to many out there that HBO has this other great series that is worth pursuing, but they just need to find a way in order to get some other attention on it.

When could it actually premiere?

Given that there’s nothing even planned right now, there’s no way we see this happening until mid-to-late 2020 at the earliest … and that may even be a little bit kind to the creative process. While this is still in play, we really hope that you are the patient type.

Do you want to see The Night Of season 2 happen on HBO, at least at some point?
