Game of Thrones: George R.R. Martin has unique spin-off idea

Game of Thrones

George R.R. Martin is already executive-producing a new Game of Thrones prequel series for HBO, one set thousands of years before the present-day action featuring Jon, Tyrion, and others. That is one that Martin is calling The Long Night, thought that is not the actual title for the story at present. Jane Goldman is the showrunner on the new series, and we actually wonder if she, HBO, or both, will be the ones responsible for the new name.

Regardless, at the moment it’s pretty clear that Martin still has some other ambitions within the Game of Thrones universe — especially when it comes to some of the minor characters. Speaking on this subject via the New York Times, here’s a little bit of what he had to say:

I wanted to do a show called “Spear Carriers,” which would actually be set during the events of “Game of Thrones,” but it wouldn’t be following Dany, Tyrion and Jaime. They would all be there in the background like Hamlet, and it would be more like, “Here’s a story about a guy in the City Watch; here’s a story about a prostitute at one of Littlefinger’s brothels; here’s a story about a mummer who’s in town to do juggling and tricks.” And they all get caught up in the events. I think that kind of show would be a lot of fun to do. Maybe I’ll be able to convince them to do it!

It’s pretty clear to us that this is never going to happen, mostly because the majority of people out there have a tendency to want to see the stories of the big characters at the center of a story. One of the big problems with a story like this is that if you want to raise the stakes, it’s hard to do so without accidentally retconning in the original show. After all, if there were some minor characters who suddenly had a big role in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga, wouldn’t we have heard about it at some point? We do like to think so on some level.

Ultimately, we’ve got enough Game of Thrones related content coming in the near future that we really don’t think that we’re ever going to be short on entertainment within this world. Remember that to go along with the prequel series that is already announced, there is also potentially room for some other shows. Back when HBO was first considering a spin-off that allowed several to be in development — some of these shows may actually still be in the works behind the scenes, even if we’re not hearing about them.
