The Call the Midwife 2018 Christmas Special is now officially less than a month away, so what better way to prepare for that than a new photo featuring the cast?
In a post on Twitter below via the series’ official social-media channel, you can see a new image featuring the entire cast and crew in action. Everyone is around to celebrate the holiday in a warm and hopefully-festive way, and we certainly think that this is something many longtime fans of the series need. Just remember the way that the most-recent season of the series wrapped up with (spoiler alert) the death of Barbara. There needed to be a way for some of these characters to eventually have a path forward, and what better way in which to properly do that than by celebrating the holiday season? Our hope is that this special is all sorts of comforting and wonderful — basically, the sort of thing that you would want this time of year.
Yet, we should also probably go ahead and wipe away any illusion that this special is going to be a reflection of anything perfect, largely due to the fact that this is an imperfect world and that is a message that Call the Midwife likes to pass along just about as often as it possibly can. It loves to paint the picture of a world that is hopeful, but also one that is bittersweet where hard things like death happen. Call the Midwife also recognizes that the holiday season is not a delightful one for every single person out there, though there are definitely many who do appreciate it.
As we eventually reach the end of this Christmas Special, it is certainly worth noting and remembering that there will be another batch of episodes in the new year. That’s where we imagine the traditional Call the Midwife story will return with potentially new faces and challenges along the way. While there is somewhat of a rotating cast with this series (losing main cast members is a fairly predictable affair these days), there’s always been an undercurrent of something familiar that makes it all okay.
The Call the Midwife Christmas Special is going to be airing this year on Christmas Day both in the United Kingdom on BBC One and in America on PBS. With that, there’s no reason for American viewers to have to worry all that much about waiting — which they are probably used to doing on some level when it comes to this series already.
