Preacher renewed for season 4, production moving to Australia
When we first discussed the show’s renewal hopes a little bit earlier this season (be sure to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for other scoop), our big concern was the ratings — they’ve been on the decline virtually every season. This is a weird, intense, but also funny show, but it’s also not one that is going to attract much of a mainstream audience. It got off to a good start back in season 1 but the attention around it has certainly shifted since then.
Yet, we do at least think that there is a devoted audience out there for it and, beyond just that, AMC seems to really like the show. This is probably why they have opted to officially bring it back.
Of course, there is one thing that does make this renewal a little bit different from ones we’ve seen before. Per Production Weekly (who first reported the news), the series is going to be heading down to Australia to film the latest batch of episodes. Why move there, especially after filming the first few seasons in North America? It could be for story reasons, but there may also be some financial incentives to go along with it. We do think that it could prove at least rather useful in helping to make this season look rather different from almost every other out there. (The other notable TV production we can think of who has filmed in Australia in recent memory is The Leftovers, which was there for the bulk of its third season.)
Speaking in a statement, here is what AMC Studios president David Madden had to say:
“Preacher is a show unlike any other on television. A passionate base of fans found their way to Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy and have followed along with their adventures, at times indescribable adventures, for three seasons … We are thankful to our partners at Sony and to Seth, Evan and Sam for everything they have brought to this series, which we are pleased to renew for a fourth season. Like the superfans of Preacher, we can’t wait to see where this journey leads next.”
If you do love Preacher, be sure to check it out live next season! The only way in which to ensure that there will be another season is to find a way to keep the numbers from going down any further than they have. If nothing else, though, this renewal does offer up the promise of more fun and surprises for quite a few weeks to come.
