The Timeless movie is set to arrive on NBC come December 20, and with that, there are many causes for excitement. Isn’t this, after all, the most wonderful time of the year? This is a story that will be about trying to save Rufus, but beyond all of that, there’s going to be time for some holiday cheer. The key art above is proof of that, and the same goes for the photo that you can see at the bottom of the article (via TVLine).

While the save Rufus storyline was set up all the way back in the season 2 finale (based on this photo, it does appear as though Rufus is saved — at least for a short period of time), how did the idea for a holiday episode come about? According to what executive producer Arika Lisanne Mittman told the aforementioned website, that had a lot to do with what NBC wanted for the event:
“[The holiday spotlight was] a request that [NBC] made that we were happy to [fulfill] … We knew even before we had our [Dec. 20] airdate that it was going to be a Christmas special. And so we totally embraced it, and I think we found a really cool story that complements that really nicely.”
We actually think having a Christmas Special here could be a blessing in disguise, mostly because the timing of the movie airing plus the story of it could make this an even more attractive option for prospective viewers out there who aren’t as familiar with Timeless. If it helps to boost the ratings, we certainly do think that this could lead to more specials down the road in the event that there is not some sort of additional Timeless story to be told. We like the way that the writers are approaching this special — while it appears to be the end on paper, everyone recognizes that the fans have already gotten this series brought back after cancellation twice. Anything is possible moving forward and, at least for the time being, we’re going to have a chance to have a little bit of hope still. Getting the viewership up is a big priority, but also so is reaping the rewards of so much hard work. The movie even being made is deeply rewarding.
