Sunday night’s Doctor Who season 11 episode 8 is far more than your standard episode of the series. After all, you’ve got Alan Cumming playing a prominent role in the story!

Earlier this earlier, the news about the former Good Wife cast member’s guest spot was first revealed (probably earlier than it was meant to), and during “The Witchfinders,” he will be taking on a role that is tied closely to the overall installment’s theme. This is an episode wrapped within layers of fear, but not the sort of typical fear that you see on Doctor Who. This isn’t really about fear of witches so much as fear of the unknown. There are people often accused of being witches who, in reality, are just different in some ways. It’s a very prescient topic, given that there are so many people out there in the world today who are persecuted just because they look or sound different. The Doctor is the champion of all underdogs, and we presume that because of that, over this episode we will see her battle for the accused and try to ensure that nothing terrible transpires.

Yet, that is going to be so much easier said than done, especially when you think about some of what The Doctor can do herself. We think that there’s a pretty good chance that she herself will face some accusations of being a witch over the course of the episode; it’s fairly easy to figure why that would come about, and for her because of that, she mostly needs to figure out how to keep herself from being destroyed alongside everyone else.

Don’t forget the timing…

There are only ten episodes for this season, save of course for the New Year’s Day special that will be airing in a little more than a month. With that in mind, we do expect most of the episodes to build in drama and also quality. Every showrunner should save some of their best stuff for last and while we hardly expect the story of “The Witchfinders” to carry over, we are at least crossing our fingers that thematically, there is a little bit of connective tissue between this installment and whatever comes up in the final two. Those will set the pace entering the New Year’s Special, which will help in part to set up whatever ideas Chris Chibnall wants to explore moving into season 12.
