Murphy Brown Thanksgiving episode slips in Thursday ratings

Murphy Brown

Thursday night was not exactly a paradise of new programming, which shouldn’t come as a surprise given that it was Thanksgiving. As a matter of fact, the only bit of new programming that was even on was the Murphy Brown Thanksgiving episode, which aired following a repeat of The Big Bang Theory.

So, how did the special do? We’re not altogether sure that CBS could’ve had much in the way of expectations for it. How could they, given the fact that there were probably many viewers who were either busy or didn’t even realize that it was on? The episode ended up generating a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is down slightly from the week before. CBS should be happy with that on some level, mostly because we have no idea what they really were expecting here.

With that being said, you could make the same exact argument with the entire Murphy Brown revival at large given the fact that this is a show that appeals mostly to an older audience — not only that, but they didn’t give it a timeslot that was befitting of a show that they thought would be a smash hit. It’s chugging along, but not in a way that makes us think that a renewal will happen for certain. In some ways, airing an episode on Thanksgiving can be seen as a tough sign, but at the same time, it kind of had to air at this particular spot. Where else are you going to put that show on the air in a way that makes some element of sense? We’re not sure that there is a good spot for it.

Anyhow, there are still many more episodes of Murphy Brown still to come. and that includes one next week entitled “Beat the Press” — one that is certainly going to be topical and/or controversial in many ways. For a little bit more news about it, just be sure to check out the attached synopsis:

“Beat the Press” – After Frank is physically attacked while covering a political rally, for the first time in her career Murphy is afraid to dispute the opposing viewpoint of a guest on her show, on MURPHY BROWN, Thursday, Nov. 29 (9:30-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

It’s not all that hard to figure out why Murphy would feel compromised and in a tough spot here. It gets harder to keep your head on straight for the sake of your career when you’ve also got people close to you put in some element of danger. Yet, we do feel like she’s going to find a way to figure it out.
