Per a new report that is coming in via TVLine, the former Psych star (he played Shawn’s dad Henry through the entirety of the USA series) will be recurring starting on Monday’s episode as a man named “Icepick.” That sounds like the sort of name that would be given to a prisoner, and that makes some sense given that this guy is described as a self-proclaimed “criminal degenerate” and someone who isn’t afraid to speak his mind (albeit while being blunt in the process). This character will be useful to getting to know the character of Rick a little bit more. He’s apparently capable of still pushing people onto the right path and is a father figure of sorts to that character.

On this upcoming episode, Icepick is going to reportedly give Rick a hefty dose of “tough love” after he arrives with some sort of problem that he’s dealing with.

How we look at this casting is rather simple: It’s another reminder of what Magnum PI and really the greater Peter M. Lenkov extended universe does so well. These are shows that constantly find a way to bring on board notable names like Ken Jeong, Cyndi Lauper, or even Dog the Bounty Hunter and Jimmy Buffett. We think that part of the appeal here is probably getting to come out and, on most occasions, play a role that is rather fun. Beyond that, it’s a chance to spend a couple of weeks filming in Hawaii and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. There’s also almost always potential for people to come back for more — judging from the recurring status, it’s almost a certainty with Bernsen. Having him around will be great in adding more of the tapestry to Rick, which is nice given that he may be the one member of Team Magnum who we know the least about at the moment.

As of right now, Magnum PI has a 20-episode first season. Given that we’re close to the halfway point, that means that we’re more than likely have a chance to see many more exciting guest stars announced as we move towards the finale. (More than likely, that will be here at some point in the spring.)
