Tonight, NBC confirmed that former The Crown star Claire Foy will be taking on the task of host for the first time on December 1; meanwhile, she will be joined by new musical guest Anderson .Paak. (Yes, that is how it is spelled.) Foy is a talented person, but part of the intrigue surrounding her being on board now is probably going to come from the fact that she’s so much better known as a dramatic performer. It’s fairly similar to when we had an appearance from Liev Schreiber on the series last week. We don’t know how it will work, but with the right material it can. The writers are really the ones who set the tone for the vast majority of shows.
Just in case people were wondering why Foy is hosting the series at this point, a big part of it may to do with The Girl in the Spider’s Web, her new film that is already out there in some theaters. Movie roles are a reason often for SNL cross-promotion; after all, that is when Steve Carell was hosting the show tonight! As we dive deeper into awards season, we’ve got a feeling that this is something that we’re going to be seeing a little bit more of.
As for Anderson .Paak, we’re not going to sit here and pretend that we know all that much about his music — we don’t. Yet, this is another move for the series to be super-current and get some people on the show who younger viewers will be able to identify with. He actually has been around and performing for a while, but this is the time in which he’s starting to get more of a mainstream break. We’re not sure if we will see him beyond the musical performances, but if he kills it during this part of the show, maybe he will be able to come back down the road.
