What is interesting when it comes to this particular episode (entitled “Broken Wing”) is that it seems to eschew what we’ve seen from the actor-director’s this season. Typically, it’s hard for actors to direct themselves and with that, we don’t often see actors helm episodes where their character is the primary focus. With that in mind, we’ve seen already Joe Mantegna direct a big Luke Alvez episode while Matthew Gray Gubler directed a big one for JJ.
This time around, though, signs actually do point towards Tyler actually directing an episode that is also essential to her character Tara Lewis — making this one of the biggest personal episodes that we’ve seen from her this season. This is going to be an hour that has the character doing a little bit of everything, whether it be work things behind the camera or also figure out a way to anchor a big performance. Along the way, we may also learn a little bit more about her past — and hopefully with that in mind, we’ll learn a little bit more about her present. We’re still eager to get to know more about what she does away from work and what some of her personal passions are.
In the event you want some other details all about what’s coming up, CarterMatt has the full Criminal Minds season 14 episode 9 synopsis with some more details:
“Broken Wing” – A professor from Lewis’ past tips off the BAU to an alarming number of overdose deaths of patients who just completed rehab, on CRIMINAL MINDS, Wednesday, Dec. 5 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Series star Aisha Tyler directed the episode.
The mystery of this episode seems to be very much about what’s happening to these former patients, and the easy assumption here seems to be that there is someone out there killing them. Maybe this is some rehab killer who is angry that people are leaving the center and they want them to stick around forever. Or, maybe there are certain grudges from rehab that this killer is trying to act out. Given what we know about Tara and her history in studying human behavior, her skill set is probably going to end up being incredibly useful.
