The Flash season 5: Where is Joe West? Jesse L. Martin’s status

As we wrote about a little bit earlier this month, series regular Jesse L. Martin is taking a little bit of time in order to recover from an injury that he suffered away from the show earlier this year. He is not leaving the show, and he will be back at some point this season. The character is away from the group tonight and it doesn’t seem like the plan is to write Joe out in some sort of devastating fashion. This is probably just something that they are going to take on and tackle as things move along this season.
Ultimately, the best thing to do at this point is to wish Martin the best and hope that the character finds a way to make it back without too much trouble. Recovery is important for anyone and it’s nice that the writers are giving him all of the time that he needs. It’s pretty clear that Joe remains a huge part of the series — he’s the emotional core of the show in that he helped to raise Barry after the death of his mother and the imprisonment of his father. Meanwhile, he’s also of course Iris’ father and someone still very much involved in their lives. He’s still valuable as a police officer out in the field, and he can effectively get things done that pretty much no other characters can.
While Joe is gone, most of the police story will probably transfer over to some other characters. Ralph Dibny may not be a cop per se, but his private-eye skills could be very much of use still in whatever context requires. Meanwhile, we also have Sherloque Wells to basically be an advanced version of this same sort of role. These characters, in tandem, are going to prove very much useful to ensuring that the search for Cicada keeps going — and of course Team Flash will deal with the meta-human side of things given that there are always going to be a number of different threats floating around out there.
