Doctor who season 11 episode 7 preview: The world of ‘Kerblam!’

Before we say anything else, Doctor Who season 11 episode 7 may have the greatest episode title in existence: “Kerblam!”

What’s that a reference to? Well, it has everything to do with what feels like an intergalactic version of Amazon and is the most-popular retailer out there. This episode starts out via the receipt of a strange package, and from there a wide array of different hijinks unfold featuring The Doctor and all of her companions. This episode seems to be more space-themed than many others this season, and with a name like “Kerblam!” you really have to think that this is going to be a lot of fun. There have been darker and more-serious episodes at times this season — it would be nice to have some fun, and also to have an episode where The Doctor herself really shines. Jodie Whittaker has been outstanding, so much so that we have her on our personal Golden Globe wishlist (you can vote for her to win our poll at the link here), but it does still feel like there is another gear that the character can rise to with the right idea and the right script backing her up.

For now, let’s just share the Doctor Who season 11 episode 7 synopsis for some greater context:

A mysterious message arrives in a package addressed to the Doctor, leading her, Graham, Yaz and Ryan to investigate the warehouse moon orbiting Kandoka, and the home of the galaxy’s largest retailer, Kerblam.

Is it time that the story expands further?

What we mean by this is that through most of season 11 to date, we have seen many standalone episodes. That’s fine given that this is what Doctor Who is and is one of the many reasons that we watch. However, as we approach the end of some seasons we do often see a larger story start to take form, whether it involves an adversary like The Master or a threat encroaching on one of the companions. Think in terms of something with larger stakes beyond just an issue that can be resolved in one episode.

Are we at that point in the narrative now? It certainly feels possible, though we are just at episode 7 in a season with ten episodes aside from the “special” that is coming later on. (As of right now, indications are that it will be a New Year’s one more so than a Christmas one.) We’d argue that by episode 9 at the latest, some sort of larger narrative should be set so that this season can end on a big, dramatic note. Plus, Doctor Who needs some more classic episodes this season, especially since episodes 4 and 5 left a little bit to be desired creatively.
