Why Absentia, Stana Katic are not eligible for 2019 Golden Globes

Absentia season 2

For those who are wondering why Stana Katic or Absentia are not present in our 2019 CarterMatt Golden Globes preview series, there is a good reason for it — and it’s not a matter of personal choice since we all wanted both the show and Stana on our lists!

Instead, we’ve done some digging and learned that the rules for the Golden Globes, at least for Drama Series, are not altogether different from the ones over at the Emmys. See the excerpt in the rulebook below, which explains why Absentia cannot be nominated for anything this year:

“Foreign programs are not eligible for television awards unless they are the result of a coproduction (both financially and creatively) between a United States and a foreign partner, which precedes the start of production for the episodes aired during the qualifying calendar year, and which includes a written and binding commitment to show the program on United States television made prior to the start of production.”

To dive into this further, Absentia was a production of Sony’s overseas, and did not actually have a US partner until Amazon came on following the conclusion of production. Had Amazon been involved from the very beginning, that would have enabled it to secure greater eligibility for these awards. Unfortunately, that was not the case here. It’s disappointing for sure, but at least we have an awareness of it this time earlier than we did the Emmys — with that, there’s no gut-punch of disappointment down the road.

Could this change in the future for the series? That’s something that we will address later on down the line — think along the lines of when season 2 actually premieres, which could be at some point in 2019. Production on the latest batch of episodes has been ongoing as of late in Bulgaria. We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves now, thinking that a series is eligibility when, in actually, there may still be something holding it back.

Why address this now?

That’s mostly a function of us doing our Golden Globes preview series for CarterMatt this month. We’re going to be covering categories that may make you think that Absentia should get recognition and in our mind it certainly is worthy of some awards love. It’s just not able to get an actual nomination this year, so we don’t want to label it as a contender when it cannot actually compete.

Just remember this: The real victory for a show of any kind is that it has the appreciation of many fans all over the world. That’s going to be the thing that actually keeps it going for years rather than some nominations. Those are nice, but they’re not as validating as having a diehard following who will happily tune in to every episode to make the show a success.
