Everything began tonight with Steve’s grandfather, and to go along with it, legendary former HPD detective Chang Apana. It turns out that there was one unsolved case from the past and throughout this episode, Steve decided that he was going to do his part in order to investigate it. From there, the entire Five-0 gang got extremely into character; or, at least as a manifestation of Steve’s mind. We saw throughout the hour a reimagining of an investigation into the crime with Steve, Danny, and some other characters as sleuths from many decades before doing their part to figure things out. Steve, understandably, played the role of his grandfather, and Danny once more was his partner. Junior was the brother of the missing young girl at the center of the case, and Tani ended up being a jazz singer who has pertinent info — alas, she was also shot dead before she could hand much of it over to the guys.
One of the joys of this episode is that the writers did find some sort of use for every single person in the main cast, even people like Kamekona and Adam who aren’t a part of every episode. Beyond just that, the sense of fun was still very much there. Even though this wasn’t necessarily Steve and Danny, there were still carguments. Meanwhile, there were some great action sequences and the music was on another level. No expense seemed to be spared to make this investigation into something that looked and felt like it was many decades ago.
As for whether or not “Steve” was able to get answers to this crime, eventually we saw Steve and “Danny” put out all of the stops in order the information that they so need. They were almost there, but in the closing minutes it started to become clear why there wasn’t a full resolution. Right at the time in which the case was starting to wind down, the attack on Pearl Harbor first happened.
Then, Steve wakes up
At this point, he seems to be empowered with some information that he didn’t have previously — he had to find the car. If he did that, he could figure out precisely what happened. Somehow, Steve solved the case in the midst of a dream at night. Danny didn’t want to believe that Steve figured it out (mostly because the idea of it was ridiculous), but he nonetheless still did. The car was found and dug up and with that, Apana’s final case had some resolution to it. Steve put the photo of the missing girl in the display case and that was the show’s way of honoring someone who was a real-life figure. Steve, meanwhile, went to the quiet burial of the girl, who could be buried in peace after so many decades stuck in a buried car without anyone knowing where she is.
Now, the restaurant
In the synopsis for this episode, there was discussing about Steve and Danny preparing to open the restaurant. We thought that we were going to get there! Yet, that didn’t happen. Instead, in the aftermath of the case, the two decided to not go through with it and sell their shares to Kamekona instead. Steve didn’t know what he was doing and once he said that, Danny agreed. Shockingly, they weren’t altogether upset about it, either.
CarterMatt Verdict
This episode is probably destined to go down as one of the coolest Hawaii Five-0 hours that we’ve seen and for many different reasons. It was the perfect way to celebrate 200 episodes even if the bulk of the episode was not set in the present. Even if there wasn’t all that much in this episode that is going to matter weeks from now, sometimes that doesn’t matter. Sometimes, you just have to enjoy the show for what it is in the moment: Fun escapism featuring actors you love and a picturesque Hawaiian setting.
As for closing the restaurant story this way, it’s a little tough to know how to feel about it. After spending so long getting to this point, how do you wrap it up like this? That part was just a little too abrupt after all the hype. We gotta settle in to see what happens with Kamekona next.
