Star Trek: Discovery season 2 spin-off may be coming with Michelle Yeoh

Star Trek: Discovery premiere

CBS All Access has proven itself to be committed to all things Star Trek in just about every way imaginable. Remember that Star Trek: Discovery is premiering season 2 in the new year, and that goes along with their Short Treks episodes and also the apparent return of Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard.

Yet, it does not appear as though this is it in the slightest, as it just so turns out that there may be another spin-off series coming featuring none other than Michelle Yeoh’s character of Captain Emperor Georgiou. Deadline reports that this series could be a continuation of some of the character’s storyline in the second season, and in a lot of ways logistically, it does make some sense to move things along in this direction. Given that Georgiou is at least somewhat separate from many of the other characters, it’s a little bit easier to extract her and send her off on some of her own adventures.

On paper, this idea does feel like a big win for almost everyone involved since Yeoh is a capable lead and the Star Trek franchise is big. With this being said, though, there are some other questions to wonder. For starters, we also are forced to wonder whether or not this franchise will ever reach over-exposure levels. This is what is happening at the moment with superhero shows; there have gotten to be so many of them where some are just not getting the breathing room and the time in order to be successful.

Basically, the market is going to dictate whether or not this series, and really any others within the Star Trek universe, are going to be successful. What does feel like a certainty is this: If Star Trek: Discovery wasn’t some sort of enormous success on CBS All Access, do you think that the network’s service would be considering more shows? The answer to that is “no.” More than likely, they want to come up with some sort of ecosystem in which they can have a wide array of different shows that are on at throughout the year so that they can keep subscribers. On the surface, that seems to be one of the biggest issues that CBS has, especially in the summer when so many people pop in and out for Big Brother.
