Orange is the New Black spin-off / sequel could happen
Apparently, the final season of Orange is the New Black on Netflix may not be the end of some of these characters at all. As a matter of fact, there are some potential discussions underway about continuing this series. Maybe this will put the focus on just a couple of the characters, or maybe it will be something akin to a new series at a new prison with different inmates.
Either way, can you really be shocked at the idea that Netflix would want to continue milking this series for just about every drop possible? Remember that we’re talking about one of the streaming service’s most-successful shows in its history, and the major reason why the next season is the last one is mostly because this particular creative has reached its end. When you think about the characters that are in and out of prison, it only made sense over time for things to move on. Since not all of these women were in there for life, it made a little bit of sense to move on to some other stages of their lives. It’s going to be emotional and tough to imagine the show not being on the air anymore … but we’ve got some time before facing that.
For now, let’s circle back to the subject of the spin-off and what could come out of that. Speaking in a recent earnings call with investors, Lionsgate TV head Kevin Beggs (per THR) had the following to say about the project:
“We’re already in discussions and, when the timing is right, we’ll talk further with [creator] Jenji [Kohan] about a potential sequel.”
These discussions may not actually go anywhere, and that is something to remember. Remember that there was at one point talk on a House of Cards spin-off featuring Michael Kelly! Had that happened, it could have been interesting and exciting … but it’s not happening. The final season is the final season there and that’s it. That could end up being the same here.
The best thing that Orange is the New Black can really do for itself is working on trying to stick the landing when it comes to the original show. After all, there is still time for them to really touch on and dive into the idea of a sequel. You just have to remember that if you completely bomb the series finale, nobody’s going to be altogether interested in checking out the new version of the show. This is one of the reasons why How I Met Your Mother had a hard time launching a new show, even a completely different one with new characters. The sentiment from the finale put any possible version of the show in jeopardy.
The final season of Orange is the New Black will premiere on Netflix next year.
