Criminal Minds season 14 ratings top A Million Little Things; Survivor’s major feat

This big episode last night drew in total a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is significant in that it ties the show’s season high in that measurement. Also, with more than 4.5 million viewers, it drew its second-highest total audience of the season. That’s not bad for the night after midterms and a time in which there is so much other competition out there. This is also worth noting because this is the first time all season the series has outright topped ABC’s A Million Little Things, which drew a 0.7 rating and could be on its way to cancellation if the numbers keep falling. We take no pleasure in saying that — it does have a full-season order, so there is somewhat of a chance to stop the bleeding here and we really hope that it does stick around.
Now, let’s get to the point of this article where we speak in awe of Survivor and its ratings. Last night’s new episode drew a 1.6 rating, and that is enough for it to win the night outright. Just think about this for a moment — this is a show that is in SEASON 37 and it is beating everything else on the night. Not only that, but it is down less than 10% versus the previous fall cycle Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers. The year-to-year decline would probably be less if you consider that Survivor aired last week on Halloween and that of course produced some super-scary numbers.

Is this the first time that Survivor has topped Empire? Not at all, but it’s still pretty remarkable when you think back to a time in which Empire was more than doubling the ratings that it has now and it was one of the biggest shows on television. For a brief period of time, it was even rivaling Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead in terms of demo viewers! It just couldn’t sustain that, which there’s really no shame in given that it produces a ton of stories every year and network TV does have its limitations.
One more new show update – We haven’t talked much about The CW’s All American, but it is doing a good job hanging on to a 0.3 rating. It’s too early to tell if that’ll lead to something beyond just this season, but that + critical reviews are at least a field goal, to use some overly-contrived football metaphor for a football-themed show.
