Doctor Who season 11 episode 6 preview: ‘Demons of the Punjab’; Yaz’s story

There is a great deal to be excited about regarding Doctor Who season 11 episode 6, entitled “Demons of the Punjab.” For starters, it seems as though the series is looking to venture back into the past! Much like the series chose to do with “Rose” earlier this season, this episode will choose to take on an important era. This time around, we could see this story especially hold great meaning for one of the characters in Yaz. This is a family history lesson for her, and the Doctor and many of her companions are going to spend a good bit of time over the course of the hour getting to understand that better.

Despite its initial premise, though, this episode is not just about history. Instead, over the course of it we are also going to have an opportunity to see actual demons present in the land (hence, the aforementioned title). Their role in this episode is clearly going to be one of the most important things to watch for here.

India, 1947. The Doctor and her friends arrive in the Punjab, as India is being torn apart. While Yaz attempts to discover her grandmother’s hidden history, the Doctor discovers demons haunting the land. Who are they, and what do they want?

We like that there is an element of mystery here, but at the same time, we also do appreciate the series’ educational merit. There are many young viewers out there who, entering this installment, likely have little to no understanding of 1940’s India. This episode should allow for a little more information on that subject.
