Outlander season 5: Some of what we know so far

Within this piece, we want to note at least a few simple things related to the upcoming fifth season … starting with the simple fact that it’s happening. The network has already renewed the show for both a season 5 and also a season 6, so there’s nothing to worry about for a good while here. These two seasons are going to be based on The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes, which are the next two books from Diana Gabaldon. Season 5 is going to run for 12 episodes (one less than seasons 2 through 4), and the same goes for season 6.
Beyond all of that, work is actually underway for season 5 — even if it’s not getting much conversation right now! The writers room has been open for many weeks now in preparation for the start of production, which is going to be happening in February. Odds are, production will be ongoing for most of the year until closer to the holiday season, and at that point, everyone can take a breather. Given the recent production timelines and the longer hiatus between filming this go-around, our early estimate is that season 5 will premiere at some point in winter / spring 2020 — we don’t want to give false hope that it will be any earlier than that, and this is also in its own way a hopeful perspective on things.
As for the story of what’s coming … we can’t really say too much beyond saying that it would spoil season 4! Yet, it is fair to say that Fraser’s Ridge and many people in North America are going to remain very much involved. Outlander is not going to be as nomadic as it has been in the past.
