True Detective season 3 trailer: Do HBO, Mahershala Ali have a winner?

What lies ahead on True Detective season 3? HBO has just unveiled a full trailer and in a word, it looks intense.

Will this be the season that actually exorcises some demons for the series? That’s something that we are still working to try and figure out. What we can say, at least at the moment, is that Mahershala Ali seems primed to get all sorts of awards recognition for his role as Wayne Hays, a detective who finds himself obsessed with a case that he cannot quite shake. The comparisons between this season and the first one with Mattthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are fairly obvious, whether it be the far-from-typical setting or the constant time jumps.

Granted, we’re not complaining if this season is a little bit more like season 1 than season 2.

If there is a reason for some serious concern, it is that True Detective is a show that does set itself up for some ridicule, given that it does take itself so seriously and often has dialogue that can be described as obtuse, at best. This is a show that does like to get weird and existential at times, but it also needs to continually find ways to make it work and have it at least teeter on realistic. That’s a line it needs to work in order to tow.

New episodes for the series are going to start off in January, and we’ll be watching intently to see if this season restores the series back to its glory days. Even if it is imperfect, there’s a chance that it can at least lift HBO up for what’s gearing up to be a huge year for them. Remember that 2019 is also going to bring both the return of Big Little Lies and the final season of Game of Thrones — and that’s to go along with some of their other standard programming and some new products that could end up being hits in their own way.
