For starters, there is his real name: Orlin Dwyer. This is a guy who has a very specific purpose to doing what he’s doing, which is to take down and destroy every meta-human possible. He is dangerous and determined — two things that often come about when someone is acting based on revenge. At the moment, that seems to be the big motivational push for his story, as we saw him presumably with his own kid at the end of this past episode. It’s possible that they were a victim of a meta-human attack, and he is doing whatever he can to either ensure their future safety (at least in his own mind) or to make it so that he continues to be alive himself. That gash in his skin suggests that there is something that he gains from fighting them.
In speaking via TVLine, Chris Klein himself had the following to say about Cicada’s origin story that will be coming down the line:
There is going to be an origin episode, a few weeks down the line. But we are going to learn little tidbits moving forward. In [last week’s episode], we got a lot of clues. Detective Joe West picks up on something — “This guy might be a dad.”
It’s fairly common for superhero Big Bads to have their origin episode, and this one feels properly timed since we’re going to be seeing a reasonable amount of Cicada before we get around to it. We got one recently on Supergirl for Agent Liberty, but that seemed to be in part motivated by Melissa Benoist’s schedule this summer.
