Arrested Development season 5 likely to be the end, notes David Cross
Speaking to Henry Melcher in a new interview on the Late Night with Seth Meyers podcast, David Cross (who plays Tobias) made it clear that he “can’t see [the show] happening again … for a number of reasons.” The second half of the season should premiere in the new year, and all signs now point towards that being how the final curtain will be dropped.
If this does turn out to be the end, it does not feel as though Arrested Development is concluding for creative reasons. Instead, it seems to be tied more towards the feedback around the show (which wasn’t as well-received for the first part of season 5 as it was in years past) as well as the backlash many cast members received in relation to Jeffrey Tambor and Jessica Walter. We are specifically referring to a joint interview that was done with the New York Times, one in which cast members seemed to be downplaying the on-set behavior by Tambor towards his on-screen wife. (Tambor was previously let go on Transparent over allegations of workplace misconduct.)
In the midst of all of this, you do have to wonder whether or not Arrested Development season 4 should have been the final season, given that regardless of whatever happens onscreen the rest of the way, it’s going to be hard for the show itself to escape the cloud caused by events away from it. The impression caused by the New York Times interview is just something that is going to be extremely hard, if not impossible, for many to block out of their minds at this point. (It also does feel like the negative reviews towards season 5 have hurt the overall show’s reputation — there was a time when this was referred to as one of the funniest shows of all time.)
