Will Outlander season 4 live+same-day ratings really matter?

Yet, it’s also clear that we are in a very different era of television than we’ve been at before. This is a time in which ratings are spelled out in a wide array of forms — there are viewers who watch live, viewers who watch via the app/on-demand, and viewers who watch via DVR at some point in the week.
With that in mind, it’s increasingly harder than ever to gauge a show’s success like Outlander in pure live+same-day numbers. Will we still cover them? Absolutely, mostly because we have a curiosity; beyond that, we like to see how many people still watch television in a traditional way. Yet, at the same time we’re also going to be taking a close look at the series’ DVR numbers while also having an awareness that there are some people who watch it even before the episodes go live on the aforementioned network. It’s a little harder to track app streams on a week-to-week basis; typically, Starz releases that data whenever they choose to. (The reality is that there’s no real binding organization that judges viewership for shows on the internet — that’s why Netflix doesn’t release any information on their own shows.)
Regardless of how much ratings information we see for Outlander, know this: We do think we’re looking at the most-watched season on record leading into it. Just look at all of the promotion leading up to it!
