MacGyver season 3 episode 5 review: Dia de Muertos, tunnels, and Bozer’s future

MacGyver

Tonight, MacGyver season 3 episode 5 gave you what was in some ways a Halloween episode — yet, it did also feature Mac working alongside Oversight and Jack in Mexico in order to take down a drug operation south of the border.

At the start of this episode, it was clear that Oversight was in a bad spot and in grave danger; over the course of the episode, it started to become clearer as to why he wanted to take part in this operation in the first place. He was looking for more information on Walsh, his former partner turned rival we learned about at the end of season 2. Eventually, Mac and Oversight were separated from Jack and had to take an enormous risk in order to make it out of there alive: Follow along a shady, untrustworthy guy into a tunnel in hopes of making it out of the area alive without the local gangsters getting to them.

This escape, despite its unusual Dia de Muertos backdrop, certainly still had many a classic MacGyver moment as he got creative to cause a landslide in order for him and his father to secure their safety. At that point, they reunited with Jack and they were able to get out of the area in one piece.

Bozer and Riley together

We’ll be the first to say that we’ve been in the Bozer & Riley ‘shipper camp for a while. It’s been a while since we’ve had a mission featuring just the two of them, so we liked seeing them pose as a suburban couple in hopes of securing some key intel. They were fun together during this, and it also did require them to think outside of the box in order to ensure that Riley could make it out of their target’s home when she was trapped there.

While Bozer was undercover, he started to question whether or not his relationship with Leanna was what he thought it could be. It doesn’t feel like anything is solidified there as of yet, but we really think this story planted the groundwork for either A) a breakup or B) Bozer realizing that he needs to find a way for his girlfriend to meet the real him.

CarterMatt Verdict

We do wish we saw more of the Bozer / Riley story, or at least more of what he wanted his future with Leanna to be. Even still, this was beyond all doubt another fun MacGyver episode that gave us more of the characters we love.
