Megyn Kelly Today officially canceled; NBC’s plans going forward

Megyn Kelly Today

There is no more need for speculation: Megyn Kelly Today is not returning to NBC. The network confirmed the news today in a new statement, one that kept the future plans for the 9:00 a.m. Eastern timeslot rather blunt:

“Megyn Kelly Today is not returning … Next week, the 9 a.m. hour will be hosted by other ‘Today’ co-anchors.”

Is this news disappointing? Certainly, but we can’t say that we’re altogether shocked by it. This has been the direction the series has been going ever since some of Kelly’s controversial remarks about blackface first came out earlier this week; it never felt like there was a huge willingness to get her back on the air, even after the apology. Kelly’s show wasn’t the subject of tremendous buzz or great ratings during the time in which it was on the air, with it instead being the subject of a number of smaller controversies — such as the uncomfortable moment she had with the cast of Will & Grace and then also that time she brought up plastic surgery in an interview with Jane Fonda. Kelly wasn’t really working at NBC, and that was before this controversy first came to light.

Kelly has not technically been released from NBC News just yet, but it does feel like that moment is coming sooner rather than later. There’s almost no chance in our mind that she is brought on to do something else, especially after a number of other people within the organization have spoken out against her already. Kelly may have the opportunity to eventually move on to another network, but we struggle to think of the ideal home at the moment. After all, the controversy here will almost certainly follow her, and we don’t exactly envision her returning to Fox News down the line, either, given the reaction many of the network’s viewers had to her after her exit the first time around.

Are you surprised at all that Megyn Kelly Today is formally done now at NBC? Be sure to share right now in the comments. Once there is more to report on the matter, we’ll have it for you here. (Photo: NBC.)
