Who is Landon Kirby, really, when it comes to Legacies? That seems to be central mystery at the heart of the series right now. We know that this character started off the series premiere as a seemingly-innocent guy who didn’t belong, presumably, at the Salvatore School. However, by the episode’s end it was clear that he was something more than anyone expected. He fled the school with a powerful knife, and that was seemingly used to cause a great deal of carnage in the closing minutes.

Finding out who Landon really is seems to be one of the primary mysteries with the series at present, but the good news here is that there do seem to be some answers coming up within the near future. In speaking on this subject further to TVLine, executive producer Julie Plec noted that there will be some information coming about his motives, and also what he really feels about Hope in the process:
“The questions of why he stole the knife and why he lied are what drive the second episode. We start to learn what he knows, as well as how he feels about the fact that he’s suddenly being hunted by Hope Mikaelson.”
A big part of what makes the premiere so fascinating in retrospect is that we do think that Landon did on some level care about Hope, and him kissing her has a good bit to do with him trying to capture one last moment of innocence before the chaos began. He likely knew throughout the whole process of seeing the school that eventually, he knew he would be escaping with the knife, and that he would have duped everyone in the process.
We’re fine with there being a little bit of mystery with Landon along the way this season — provided of course that the story makes sense, and provided that we’ve got a little bit of fun along the way.
