Legacies series premiere review: Is Hope Mikaelson’s story off to a great start?

The Legacies series premiere arrived on The CW Thursday night amidst the shadow of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Yet, it didn’t feel weighted down by it. Beyond that, there’s a pretty good chance that it recruited some new viewers in the process.

Let’s start by spelling out exactly what this show is: It’s a teen drama with supernatural elements. It’s a little bit lighter than the other two series in tone and to date, the characters have had an opportunity to have a little bit of fun. You got some of that with Alaric’s daughters Jodie and Lizzie, but also a little bit of drama. For starters, Josie is struggling after breaking up with her ex Penelope, who seems manipulative and out to cause some problems for her. Lizzie has a temper and isn’t afraid to show it; she’s a supportive sister but also fiercely protective.

As for Hope Mikaelson, she spent most of the premiere giving a tour of sorts to a human in Landon, someone who didn’t necessarily belong here despite everything that he went through. His friend found himself admitted to the school, and with that, he found himself lonely and seeking out someone. Through this relationship, we got a chance to see how Hope was living her life in the aftermath of losing both her parents and starting anew. She was doing okay, in the end. She has a new father figure in Alaric, someone who cares about her and trusts her.

Yet, there was a surprise twist near the end of the episode, as it turns out that maybe Landon is something more than what he claimed to be. He played everyone seemingly like a fiddle, and because of that was able to leave the Salvatore School (the Harry Potter like institution in which many characters stayed at) with his mind intact. He wanted to take something valuable from there, and in the process of that, really did not want anyone to know anything about his true self.

This led to Hope getting desperate tonight and doing something questionable: Dark magic in order to ensure that her wrong was righted. She teamed up with Josie in order to find the location of Landon — and the stolen knife he took. That said knife apparently caused a bus crash, and then a lot of death to go along with it.

CarterMatt Verdict

Legacies was a good show for what it was — a solid teen drama with some interesting characters; it feels like a natural part of The Vampire Diaries universe. Yet, this premiere may not have had any sort of big, jaw-dropping moment for most of the hour to get many people talking until the closing seconds, but it still managed to do enough to get us hooked on the future.
